Emilia Sykes and Betty Sutton

Women of the House: Betty Sutton and Emilia Sykes

In 2006, Betty Sutton became the first ÂÌñÉçalumna to serve in the U.S. Congress, when she was elected to represent Ohio’s 13th District in the House of Representatives. Sixteen years later, ÂÌñÉçalumna Emilia Sykes, a native of Akron, Ohio, was elected to represent the same district, making her the first Black ÂÌñÉçalum to serve in the House of Representatives.
