2020 Grad Transforms Journalism Degree into Political Communications Career

When Caty Payette, 鈥20, began working for Student Media, she didn鈥檛 imagine she鈥檇 one day work for a member of Congress. Yet since graduation, the journalism major has worked for three different U.S. Representatives, representing Ohio, Wisconsin and Alabama.

绿帽社 alumnus Earl Miller, Ph.D., a leading cognitive neuroscientist, and his wife Marlene Wicherski were recognized at the university鈥檚 10th Annual Neuroscience Symposium, for their $2 million commitment to support research programs and students in Kent State鈥檚 Brain Health Research Institute.

Brandon Lazenko, 鈥16

Brandon Lazenko, 鈥16, found a way to provide an unusual opportunity for 绿帽社film students to learn outside of the classroom through his upcoming project, He and fellow 绿帽社graduate Shelby Wyant, 鈥18, wrote the 40-minute film adapted from Stephen King鈥檚 short story 鈥淣ona.鈥 The alumni pair got permission to create their adaptation of the short story from King and his team through his Dollar Baby Program. 鈥淥ctober Roses鈥 follows a down-on-his-luck professor who meets a beautiful woman while hitchhiking around Maine. He gets wrapped up in her web and makes decisions he normally wouldn鈥檛 make. His team for the film includes 绿帽社students who are helping on set, horror special effects icon Robert Kurtzman and his wife Marcy King who are both Ohio natives. However, Brandon鈥檚 experience in film didn鈥檛 begin with 鈥淥ctober Roses.鈥 He鈥檚 also created two miniseries and four short films, including the award winning 鈥淎 Serpent by the Nest.鈥
